I have known Karl-Friedrich Scheufele for around 30 years. Outstanding personalities like Mr Scheufele are rare in the watch industry today. All too often, positions of power in the watch industry are occupied by managers who don't really have any interest in watches. For them, it's just another step in their career; if they've recently managed a company in a completely different industry, they're naturally instantly watch experts.
Karl-Friedrich Scheufele is a watch enthusiast through and through, and he also has an eye for beauty...
Take the first L.U.C movement, double barrel, chronometer certified, micro-rotor, thin construction, a very thin construction, and the diameter is relatively small. Yeah, and I'm not telling you a secret if I say that watch is becoming smaller. Welcome or welcome back to Watch Advisors on YouTube, or The Watches of the Stars. And this morning I do have the pleasure to introduce you to Mr. Karl-Friedrich Scheufele. Good morning, Mr. Scheufele.
We are filming here in Geneva, the museum, and it's interesting when you come in there is a sign saying 'Work in Progress'. And I think what's happening here is also happening at Chopard 24 hours, 365 days, more or less. You are always work in progress. You have been integrating a new important part of the manufacturing process. You are now also able to do your own dials, I heard.
Yeah, well, yeah, it's true that 'Work in Progress' can probably define Chopard quite well. We never stop. We don't really rest on our laurels. And of course, it's important, talking about production, talking about the manufacture, that you master all the trades within the manufacturer. The dial, as is generally said, is the face of the watch. You look at somebody's face first before you probably look at anything else. And therefore we started integrating this manufacturing process for dials 25 years ago. We became partner shareholder of METM, this company that also serves part of the industry and continues to do so. Some time ago we completed the acquisition, but nothing really changes except that yes, we can say that we make our own dials. And by the way, every time I'm impressed at the number of stages a dial goes through. I mean, it is something that is not generally known. And it could be something for you to discover and communicate because I think it's quite an amazing process. I think our audience is more than happy to learn more about how to do this. And I've seen the production of dials in the past and I know it's a very delicate process. You don't do any error because you do one error, the dial is gone. Precisely, precisely. So there's no trial and error, it's just no.
Besides this, I just look back into the year 1996 when you started your adventure with L.U.C. Today this is something as it was always there, but it started from nothing, from zero. You had a vision in a time when lots of people didn't even think about doing such a long-term project. Today, where would you say is L.U.C. and the entire production of movements and also now the Alpine Eagle? Where is everything standing for you and where is your vision for the next years? What is the, where are you going to drive the vehicle to? If you look at a life cycle, you can definitely say now, as you see, L.U.C. as many call it, has reached maturity. Yes, we went through the child stage and we went through adolescence. Now, more than 25 years later, definitely we are a mature adult manufacturer and recognized as such. We can see and tell this from the success we recently have with a number of L.U.C. watches, one of which is so much in demand that we have 18 months delivery time. A relaunch of the 1860 in stainless steel with a salmon color dial. Quite frankly speaking, it is double-edged. Very happy that we are so successful, but also very concerned that we are not able to deliver what we would like. What is next? What is L.U.C. doing now? Well, you see in the range of complications that have been done so far, there is still lots of things to do. You can combine combinations, innovations. And what is next? What comes after the minute repeater? Think about it. You know, there's still another stage. Of course, I'm asking my audience in the comment section, please share your thoughts, and I'm pretty interested to read what you think.
