Govind Dholakia, founder of Shree Ramkrishna Exports, spoke at a BNI conference about raising children with resilience, the importance of handling rejection, and the value of experience over technology. He recounted a story of a boy who committed suicide after being rejected because he had never heard 'no', emphasizing that his company's boys learn rejection early. He described an emergency support system for employees, citing an incident in Indore where a jeweler resolved a theft accusation within half an hour. Dholakia discussed the thin profit margins in bullion (0.01%) and the need to stay competitive. He addressed Gen Z, noting they resist advice and prefer fun, and argued that machines deteriorate while human skills grow, so humans are essential. He advised elders to avoid giving unsolicited advice, sharing that he never advises his family until asked. He concluded by thanking BNI members and acknowledging that his words are God's, not his own.

Key takeaways

  1. Dholakia's company provides a 24/7 emergency support network for employees, leveraging jeweler clients worldwide to resolve crises within half an hour.
  2. He stated that bullion businesses operate on a 0.01% profit margin, making competition the primary focus.
  3. He believes Gen Z responds better to humor and practical examples than to bookish knowledge.

So they used to say, Bhagyesh, in a speech, that right now I am... recently, brother said that there should be one and he should be raised in such a way that the whole family takes care of him, everyone watches his face, and then he went to college.
He turned 20 and he proposed to a girl. The girl said no, she said no, suicide. Suicide, she said no because in 20 years he has never heard 'no'. So the big advantage for our boys is that they realize that there is rejection, we are nothing, we are nothing. We send these boys out, and as time goes by, different styles come, but why is it easy for us? Let me tell you, if they face any trouble in any city, all the jewelry shop owners in the world are our clients. So even if they don't know them, if any such emergency arises, we call them and within half an hour, whatever problem they have gets solved.
But it happened once, 15 years ago, in Bhopal, or rather in Indore. A boy from Indore went to a Gujarati community gathering. Someone's mobile phone fell, and we had given him a card or something. So this boy came, and they didn't know where he came from. They accused him of stealing the mobile, abused him, and did everything. Then he started crying. Then he called the emergency number we had given. So they said, 'Brother, don't say anything right now, or you will regret it. I am sending a person who will come and convince you all.' So they called the jeweler, and he reached there in half an hour. The mobile was found in the car's dashboard. So the matter was settled. But if something like this happens, we have this emergency facility which not everyone has.
Look, brother, profit is always there, competition is always there in any business. If a business runs on 100% profit, then 90% is considered less and 10% more. Now, if a business runs on only 5% profit, then 4% is considered less and 6% more. Now, in bullion, everyone works on a margin of 0.01%. If someone takes more than that, then there is no fixed profit. The main competition is with our competitors, and we should stay in that competition.
The current generation, right, Gen Z, we deal with them daily, right? They don't even want to listen to us if we pay them this much salary for just 45 minutes. And this is my new college that I recently joined. It's co-ed, right? So boys, right, they want to test me every day, right? Being a teacher, they try to bother us in some way, right? And okay, the point is that I am a lecturer in Entrepreneurship Development. So you people, all these businessmen, and including you, what you do practically, what we teach theoretically in BBA and MBA, right? So for today's Gen Z generation, who will become India's businessmen in the future, or BNI's next entrepreneurs, right? So what are those points, other than bookish knowledge, that I should teach today's generation? So give me three or four points that I can tell the next generation.
So, brother, how can that be done in 10 minutes? It takes half an hour to explain. I just like to say one line: no power in the world can defeat your confidence. You will get maximum learning from that. And these boys, they just want to have fun. So if you joke with them, they will be ready to listen. In today's generation, new machines have come everywhere, people's jobs are going. So what do you have to say about this? Should more work be done by humans or by machinery?
I often say that machines, they keep deteriorating. You take one today, and tomorrow its power will go down. Any machine in the world, but a human's power, as they are, they become higher tomorrow. Their skill increases, knowledge increases. So machines are necessary, technology is necessary, but humans are needed to handle them. Humans are needed to handle them.
Like our age, we have experience. The new generation, they are more interested in computers, Instagram, WhatsApp, LinkedIn today, whereas they should sit with their elders. So, what should be done for the experience they have gained? First of all, we elders need to understand that no generation, not just today but ever, likes to be advised. So, don't give advice first. You will be happy to know that in my family, my nephews, sons, daughters, nieces, I have never given advice to anyone, never. When they ask, when they are hungry for it, I give them an hour or two, serve them everything. But until they need it, you should stay away from them.
Because in every generation, people feel that the kids have gone bad. This is not just today's thing. We were in Dudhala 101 years ago, and in the whole village, we used to keep a 'takko' (a tuft of hair). I told you before, there was no one to cut it, so a gang would come inside. Now, the mothers had time to cut it, so they would cut it. But everyone kept the 'takko'. So, when we started studying, we kept our hair. The elders used to say that these boys have gone bad, 'jatiyala' (long-haired). They called us 'jatiyala', boys with hair, so 'jatiyala' boys have gone bad. Now, those elders were not wrong, but they spent their whole life with a 'takko', so it would seem that way, that hair shouldn't be kept. So they would seem like they had gone bad. We should live the way we want to live, and our son should live that way. First, you have to get that out of your mind.
The boy's place is different. The boy doesn't have experience. The elders have the bag of experience. The boys only have strength, energy. They should use that energy, they should run, but they should take advice from the elders daily. Take advice from the elders, and when they ask for advice, give it in one line. Friends, you have given me so much love, selfless love, affection. You don't have to take anything, yet I bow to the greatness of your large hearts. If anything I said touched you, if it was useful in your life, then it's not mine. God has called me through me for you, and this entire program has been organized for you. It is God's, we accept God's will. And if something was said incorrectly, I apologize for that. Thank you again to all the BNI members, committee members, and all of you who have come from all over Gujarat. Special greetings to all of you. Thank you. And if God plans such a thing again, we will meet again. Thank you. Good luck.
[Applause]
