Govind Dholakia, founder and chairman of Shree Ramkrishna Exports, recounted his early days in the diamond trade, starting with a 1970 partnership in Surat. He described getting a 34% yield where a Mumbai firm, P.D. Kothari Diamonds, expected only 28%, and his refusal to profit from an overvalued lot, selling it at its true value of 450 rupees despite an offer of 635 from Jantibhai Master. This integrity, he said, built a foundation that made Ramkrishna Exports a 14,000 crore company. He advised staying positive by seeing negativity in others as a divine flaw and feeling pity, not anger. He credited his success to 'acceptance,' a trait he declared when honored by De Beers in 2003. The talk concluded with a story, and he engaged with audience questions on positivity.

Key takeaways

  1. Dholakia refused to sell a diamond lot for 635 rupees, accepting 450, and credited this integrity for Ramkrishna Exports becoming a 14,000 crore company.

Questions asked in this interview

  1. 6:11My question to you is, how to stay positive in every situation of life?

Let me give you an example. When we started the company in 1970, there was a company in Mumbai called P.D. Kothari Diamonds. We brought goods from them here to Surat. They had a branch office, and they gave goods to Hirabhai Vadiwala. So he wrote on the lot that the weight should be 28%. That means if a diamond is 100 cents, after polishing, 28 cents should remain.
So I got 34% because we were three partners and two workers, all five of us, and there was no loss, so the weight came to 34%. So I told the brother that our lot is ready, take a look. He said that we don't get that much weight. We make all the goods, and we only get 28% or 27%. Now if you give 34%, it will ruin all of us. They will demand 34% from us, and how will we give it?
So I told him, brother, you take the big diamonds and leave the small ones. I said, brother, we don't do anything wrong. I won't do anything wrong. So you take this lot, I will give it to them. He said, but it will ruin us. Govind, what will happen to us? We are all happy. So Govind, if it ruins us, I said, then do whatever you want to do. I gave him the lot. He made the big and small diamonds 26% weight. I came back.
He immediately paid four rupees per piece as labor and gave another lot. I thought to myself, if he gets a profit at 26%, and I get 34%, then I won't get a profit. So I have to make my own. I also get goods from home, but where to get them, I don't know. So I went to the diamond market to get goods.
There was an office here for diamonds. I went to Dadar and asked if I could get diamonds. I want to buy them for cash. He said, you won't get them here, but you can buy them for cash. I will come with you. Give me a one percent commission. The brother came with me and took me to four offices. Now I didn't know the price of diamonds, but he quoted a price and didn't reduce even a rupee. So I said, give me five carats. Five carats means one gram, five carats of diamond weight per gram.
So I said, he said, five won't be available, you have to take ten. Now the price was 91, so it would be 910 rupees. I had only 500 rupees with me. He said, no, you have to take a minimum of ten carats. But I said, I only have 500 rupees. So he said, this broker will come to your house and take it. Now I knew there was no money at home.
So I bravely took ten carats. The broker came with me. It was just after my wedding. We were staying at our partner's house, eating and drinking. So I went in the afternoon and woke him up. I said, Veerji, now we have to pay 420 rupees. 410 for the rough and 10 for the broker's commission. He called me Bhagat, Govind Bhagat. So he said, Bhagat, where is the money? My partner said, money? In Kathiawadi, money is called 'fadiya'. In Kutch, they might call it 'fadiya', I don't know. He said, where is the money? But I said, now we have brought this lot, now you will have to do something.
So he told his wife to bring back the 200 rupees I had given you for household expenses. She took out 200 and gave it to him, and he gave me 20 from his pocket. This was the first business I did. Then what happened was, he processed half the lot and gave it back. Within a week, he paid me five rupees as labor. He said, don't give the goods to anyone else, give them only to me. And everything started going well.
After two or three months, someone told me to treat the black edge, and you will get more money for it. Right now you are giving goods at a certain price, but you will get six and a half for it. So I said, I don't know. There was a brother from a neighboring factory, so you get it done. So he got it treated.
There was a diamond merchant named Jantibhai Master. I sent the broker to him. The first offer that came was for 600. So I said, no, I won't sell it for less than 700. So he came back. I used to give goods daily for 450. I went to him and said, there is an offer from Jantibhai Master for 625. He said, give it to me for 635. I said, I have to give it to you for 450 anyway. He asked why. I said, the goods I give you for 450 are off-color goods. This is treated to look white, but it's not white. Both partners stood up and said, let's talk. I said, yes, you are being cheated in the market. But a new world is coming, so I have shown you. Now, that lot with the offer of 635, I gave it to him for 450. Because it was actually worth 450. That was cheating.
Now imagine, at that time, the village boy Govind was 20 years old. At that time, he was like you. If at that time, in the greed for money, he had sold the goods for 635, then today Ramkrishna Exports would not have become a 14,000 crore company. The foundation must be strong.
Thank you, brother. Okay, let's do this. Two boys have asked questions. Now let's give a chance to a sister to ask a question. Let's give the girls a chance to ask questions. Yes.
