Govind Dholakia, founder and chairman of Shree Ramkrishna Exports, contrasts his humble beginnings with his current wealth to argue that money is not the address of happiness; sleep is. He recounts a six-anna lunch in Lathi costing 37 paise, better than a 20,000-rupee dinner in Moscow where he could only eat fruit. He describes sleeping in fields while watering crops, now staying in a 10-lakh-rupee room in Udaipur, finding no difference. Dholakia discusses his passion for photography, noting his first camera cost 48 rupees in 1971. He campaigned to allow cameras at mass weddings, offering one crore rupees for a photo of his own wedding. He says he never directly talks with cameramen, relying on his team, and praises Ajaybhai, their long-time video guy.

Key takeaways

  1. Money is not the address of happiness; sleep is, whether in a field or a 10-lakh-rupee room.
  2. He bought his first camera in 1971 for 48 rupees, worth about 25,000-30,000 rupees today.
  3. Stayed in Dubai's Al Burj for one and a half lakh rupees and a Udaipur room at 10 lakh rupees a day.
  4. Dholakia has traveled to more than 50 countries, spending 30-40 percent of time abroad over 30 years.

  1. 3:49... or you have to select a photographer, what parameters do you look for in that photographer, so that everyone gets an idea of what level we should reach, and how — when big functions happen there, how do we all get guidance from you?

I have said that I took a six-anna lunch in Lathi. It cost 37 paise — half a meal of three rotis, dal and rice — and I have eaten that. And in '97 I went to Moscow, and I even had a dinner worth 20,000 rupees, because apart from vegetarian food, nothing was available — only non-veg. If vegetarian wasn't available, there was an American five-star hotel where we went for dinner. Now, the entry for that dinner alone was 300 dollars, but you could eat whatever you wanted, or it was of 500 quality. But we could eat nothing except fruit, everything else was non-veg. So that 300 dollars — that 20,000-rupee dinner — and in that I ate only fruit, nothing else was edible for us. So we have had both the six-anna lunch and the 20,000-rupee dinner, both experiences. But let me tell you this: compared to the 20,000-rupee dinner, that six-anna lunch was better, because that was ours, that was ours.
Friends, we sleep in the fields because we used to water the fields at night. When we would go with a kerosene lamp and the water would flow, all the insects and creatures would come out — scorpions, snakes, everything would come out and run ahead of the water. We would be lying beside them; whoever it reached would come. In such a situation we lived. Now, today it has been five years — I was going to Dhar, and on the way there was a place to stop for lunch, a tiffin stop. We have the habit of sitting on the ground, so I lay down on a cot, and a man was fanning me. I fell asleep. So the orchard owner there asked, 'Who is this? Do you know him?' I said no. He said, 'In Surat, how many big people's names have you heard?' So he said, 'Brother, there is Vallabhbhai Topi, there is Vasanth Hari, there is Govind Bhagat...' He named seven or eight people. I said, 'Is this Govind Bhagat?' He said, 'Go, go, now you...' So he said, 'How can you say that? Someone might hear you.' So the point is, we are still that same person lying on a cot in the field, and yet we stayed in Dubai's Al Burj for one and a half lakh rupees. And recently, we celebrated my 50th wedding anniversary and went to Udaipur, where the room rent was 10 lakh rupees a day. We stayed in a 10-lakh-rupee room, we stayed in Al Burj for one and a half lakh, and we have also stayed in fields. But let me tell you from experience — it makes no difference. Once sleep comes, everything is pleasant; there is no difference. Sleep should come, whether it is in a field or not. So money is not the address of happiness; our sleep is the address of happiness. So all these are experiences. Because for 30 years I have been such that I stayed abroad 30–40 percent of the time and traveled to more than 50 countries of the world. So I have experience. So when we converse, I can give you the benefit of experience. Otherwise, it is not as if I know everything. Because, as you said, I am a 'hath-chopdi' — a walking notebook — and you are all graduates, so you would know more. That is a different matter.
Those friends who have questions, please raise your hand. Yes, Dhruvbhai.
