Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Thursday that inviting Russian President Vladimir Putin to the December G20 summit in Miami could encourage Moscow to continue its policies toward Ukraine. Tusk said Poland had no influence over the U.S. decision but added that he would support the invitation if it helped bring about what he described as a just peace. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington had invited Putin to the summit as an opportunity for him to engage with President Donald Trump and other world leaders. Donald Tusk, Prime Minister of Poland, discussed the potential invitation of Vladimir Putin to the G20 summit. He recalled that after Russia's first attack on Ukraine, Russia was excluded from the G8, which became the G7, and that during a summit in Canada, he had argued against President Trump's suggestion to include Putin, as it would justify Russian aggression. Tusk said that if inviting Putin to the G20 could bring a just peace, he would be in favor, but he fears it would encourage Russia's aggressive policy. He emphasized Poland's unique position as the only country bordering both Russia and Belarus and Ukraine, and the high costs Poland pays for supporting Ukraine. He stressed that Poland knows the difference between peace and capitulation, and that forced capitulation of Ukraine would lead to tragedy for other nations. He expressed support for President Trump's peace efforts but worried they might embolden Putin.

Krzysztof Polasik, Polskie Radio. A question to both prime ministers. What do you think about inviting Vladimir Putin to the G20 summit, and how should the European Union react?

I think that in such a complicated situation, and in connection with what Prime Minister Tusk said about ballistic missiles falling near the border, that drones are also reaching Bulgaria, not to mention Romania, the risk is growing. This conflict is escalating, and we must use every reason, every opportunity for dialogue. Lines of communication in a conflict of such an intense nature should be open, and every opportunity to talk about peace must be used. We have no interest in this war continuing. It is a war of attrition. I would like to take this opportunity to share with the state and, above all, with Prime Minister Tusk, that we have a growing number of Bulgarian tourists in Poland. We have hundreds of students studying at these wonderful universities, and many Bulgarian consuls general. We have very good relations with them, who support these students here and back cultural programs at the Bulgarian embassy.
