Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook has filed a lawsuit to block her removal after President Donald Trump announced he was firing her from the Fed board. Cook, the first Black woman appointed to the Federal Reserve, argues the move is unlawful and that unproven mortgage fraud allegations cannot be considered cause for dismissal. The case could set up a major legal battle over the Fed’s independence and the limits of presidential power. #trump #LisaCook #usnews #FederalReserve #TrumpNews #trumpandlisacook #FedGovernor #USPolitics #BreakingNews #FederalReserveBoard #LegalBattle #CourtCase #Washi...

Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook has filed a lawsuit to keep her position on the central bank's powerful board after President Donald Trump announced he was removing her earlier this week. Cook, appointed in 2022 by then President Joe Biden, made history as the first black woman to serve on the Federal Reserve's governing body. Her lawsuit filed Thursday, August 28th, morning in Washington, asks a federal judge to declare that Trump's attempt to remove her is unlawful and that she remains an active member of the Fed. The case sets the stage for what could be a high-stakes legal battle, one that may test both the independence of the Federal Reserve and the extent of presidential powers. On Monday, August 25th, Trump posted a letter addressed to Cook stating that he had sufficient cause to remove her. The letter cited accusations of a mortgage fraud first raised by Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill PT. According to Trump and his allies, Cook allegedly claimed two separate properties as her primary residence. The Justice Department has said it will investigate the allegations, but so far Cook has not been charged with any wrongdoing. In her lawsuit, Cook argued that an unsubstantiated allegation made prior to her Senate confirmation cannot be considered valid cause for removal under federal law. Legal experts note her case may be complicated, as Trump believes he has authority to dismiss her, even without proven charges. The 24-page complaint accuses the president of attempting to bypass laws meant to shield the Fed from political interference. However, the Supreme Court has previously described the Fed as a uniquely structured body with special protections. In May, the court emphasized its long history of insulation from direct White House control. At a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Trump said he was prepared for a legal fight. The Fed itself issued a statement saying it will abide by whatever decision the court makes in Cook's case. Ultimately, the courts will decide whether Lisa Cook can continue to serve on the Federal Reserve Board during the legal proceedings or whether she must step aside until the case is resolved.

At a Senate Banking Committee hearing in 2023, then Senator J. D. Vance of Ohio pressed Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook over her comments on diversity. I want to start maybe by just pointing out the obvious that one of the important things the Federal Reserve does of course is hopefully help us prevent the next global financial crisis. And I want to focus in particular on Miss Cook on some of your views here because I think you've written some things I agree with. You've written some things that I disagree with too. And so just to start with and to give you some chance to explain your particular perspective here. I understand this is a very complicated question, but at a high level, what do you think caused the 2008 global financial crisis?
Lisa Cook 3:07 ↗
I think there were multiple factors causing the 2008 crisis. Certainly, I would say living in Michigan, I certainly saw the mass layoffs that allowed for people who had taken out mortgages to no longer be able to make those payments. So that to me was one of the primary causes. But certainly extending credit in a way that was not sensible, both receiving credit and extending credit, especially in the subprime sector, helped to cause the global financial crisis.
J.D. Vance 3:50 ↗
Well, I appreciate that, Miss Cook, and I agree with you. And you know, of course, one thing that I'd add here is that we took, as you said, some primary credit problems and really exploded them by introducing a whole host of highly complex financial instruments. Seems like nobody understood them especially well. That obviously provided a lot of leverage in the economy. And so when $10 disappeared, all of a sudden a million dollars disappeared, $10 million disappeared, and on and on the dominoes went. I want to ask Miss Cook, if you had to rank it, where would you say a lack of racial and gender diversity ranks on that list? Would you say it's a top five factor, a top 10 factor, and what caused the global financial crisis? Lack of gender and racial diversity, of course, at the big banks.

Senator, as a Federal Reserve governor, I think about the dual mandate first and I think about the two legs of that dual mandate and those are maximum employment and stable prices. And as a governor, I have been engaged with my colleagues on the Federal Open Market Committee in fighting inflation aggressively and I have been focused on the dual mandate and that's how if reconfirmed I would plan to proceed.
