We have breaking developments at this hour as the president of the United States is lashing out because he was just hit with one of the worst legal troubles to date. He is being forced to sit down for a deposition in the lawsuit he brought against the BBC. If you don't know anything about this lawsuit, he brought it against the BBC, the British Broadcasting Corporation, for $10 billion.
The reason he says the BBC defamed him over his remarks on January 6, 2021, leading up to the insurrection at the United States Capitol. This lawsuit was brought in the Southern District of Florida, his favorite choice of venue. And well, he didn't expect the BBC to really fight back because in the past, lawsuits that he has brought against media companies were quickly settled, right? He sued ABC, settled. He sued other companies, quickly settled. And he does this to quickly get a settlement. The BBC said no. And now a federal judge has ruled just moments ago, literally moments ago, that he has to sit down for a deposition. And it's coming at a time where his Department of Justice is no longer ruling out potentially blocking the certification of certain electoral votes. Mike DeWine, the governor of Ohio, is breaking from his Senate candidate, Vivek Ramaswamy. And Donald Trump is heading to Georgia, and John Oath has a clear message for him.

And let's get started with the big news of the afternoon, which is that a federal judge has ordered President Donald Trump to sit for a deposition in his $10 billion defamation lawsuit against the BBC by December 11th. The order was handed down by US Magistrate Judge, and it came as lawyers for the British broadcaster complained that Trump had delayed his appearance. Charles Tobin, the attorney for the BBC, said that with two months left in the discovery period, we haven't been able to depose the plaintiff. He noted that there was an agreed-upon date of October 16th, but that Trump had canceled it for a matter of national importance. In fact, he was campaigning in Georgia. He was participating in party politics and prioritized that over sitting for the deposition, said the lawyer. Now, the judge says that Trump must sit for the deposition by December 11th or face sanctions up to dismissal of his lawsuit, unless the discovery period was extended past December 18th.
So, I'm a lawyer. I have done numerous cases involving defamation, civil litigation. Let me explain to you what this means. In every single lawsuit, there is what is called discovery. Discovery is when you get documents from the other side, when you get testimony from the other side to prove or disprove allegations. Part of discovery is a deposition. A deposition is a taped sworn statement made under oath where the witness is essentially questioned like inside of a courtroom, but they do it at a conference table in a lawyer's office. In every lawsuit, you have a period by which discovery has to be concluded. There are prescribed dates because when you file a civil lawsuit in federal court, you get what is called a scheduling order from the judge. You usually talk to the other side, you nail down dates, and the scheduling order outlines every single date from the start of the lawsuit all the way to a future trial date, and you essentially fill in the dates as you go.
Well, the discovery period is a time in which the parties are able to get documents, do these depositions, question witnesses. There's a set prescribed time. Judges don't like moving the discovery period because when you move the discovery period, when you extend it past December 18th in this case, you push the trial date and ultimately the judge's dockets get clogged. I worked for a judge. I clerked on the Middle District of Florida for a little while, and my judge had a rule. She hated having any case on her docket for longer than two years. And oftentimes cases, when you push discovery deadlines, they sit for two plus years. And so this judge isn't having it. He's making clear that Donald Trump has to sit down for a deposition on or before December 11th, which is in just six weeks' time.
Now, the president desperately doesn't want that because this lawsuit is backfiring in the way that now he will have to sit for a deposition where the BBC will be able to go in and inquire about his mental state on January 6, 2021. They will be able to inquire what he was thinking, what he was doing. Remember, they also want to get special counsel Jack Smith under oath, who says he's willing to do so. And so you have a very precarious legal situation for the president, and it happens as he has a precarious election coming up in just a matter of 10 days or so. This election could decide his fate in Congress, and you have to vote. That's why I partnered with this group right here. Election Day is literally right around the corner. These elections are the most important elections of our lifetime, and I have made it my mission on this channel to make sure that you have the ability, full ability, to go and make your voice heard, to go vote at the polls.
There's so many critical issues right now that are going to impact so many Americans. No matter where you are, there is an important election on the ballot. And every one of the decisions that we cover on a day-to-day basis was made by someone who won an election. So hold on to that. The people who get to decide this, well, they're on the ballot on November 3rd, and you need to make sure that you can make your voice heard. So, what do you do to actually do that? Pull up Vote E. It's free, it's nonpartisan, and most importantly, it never sells your data. I've used it and I think it's great. It'll allow you to check your voter registration, find your local polling place, show you your ballot ahead of time so you can educate yourself before you even get into the voting booth, and then it'll text you when it's time to vote. It's powered by NextGen America, and it's truly amazing because it's not selling your data like Elon Musk does. It's not trying to acquire your information for nefarious reasons. That's not it. And I've used this, which is why I'm trying to tell you about it. It helps you literally just go and make your voice heard. The link is in the description and pinned in the comments. Make your plan before you close this tab. It is so important.
Now, this election is critical for so many reasons, but number one, I say for everyone, because a lot of people are scared about what happens if the DOJ tries to mess around, you have to make it too big to rig. You have to go out and vote so much that they can't screw around with it. But today, Todd Blanche, the Attorney General of the United States, did make remarks that, well, problematic. Take a listen.
