Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw discussed Biocon's FY27 outlook, highlighting biosimilars as a key growth driver. EBITDA margins are tracking toward 23% at the consolidated level, with biosimilars at 26%, and she expects consolidated margins to reach 24% in FY27. She emphasized the Lantus opportunity in Europe and the US for generics, and the GLP-1 opportunity over two to five years, positioning Biocon as uniquely integrated from API to device. She noted insulin franchise revenue has crossed $300 million, with capacity expansion in Malaysia starting Q1 FY27. She stated major capex is behind them, focusing on capacity utilization and business growth, and expressed bullishness across biosimilars, generics, and Syngene.

Questions asked in this interview

2
  1. 8:56So any major capex plans, investment plans in biologics or manufacturing?
  2. 9:32So ma'am, so any guidance would you like to give for the next quarter, coming quarters?
Kiran Mazumdar-shaw 0:01 ↗
Biocon's overall outlook for the quarter. Of course, biosimilars is again a key driver of growth. If you exclude that, which was a one-time bolus of growth last quarter last fiscal, and if you look at it at a consolidated level, it is about 10% growth in terms of quarter four. And if you look at the whole year at a consolidated level again, I think generics and biosimilars have delivered 17% and 16% year-on-year growth on a like-for-like basis. But the most important aspect of this growth is the EBITDA improvement. In terms of EBITDA margins, it is now tracking towards 23% at a consolidated level. But if you look at biosimilars, it has been at a 26% level. And if you look at the growth, we have seen a 29% growth in EBITDA and a 33% improvement of EBITDA in the biosimilars business. So I think going forward, this will only get better. In the consolidated business, when you look at biosimilars, generics, and the research services in FY27, you will see an improved growth in revenues, EBITDA growth, and of course, EBITDA margins will be more in the sort of 24% level is the expectation.
Recently, of course, type 2 diabetes, Lantus in Europe for the generics business was a very strong growth driver. You have seen an improvement in EBITDA also in the generics business. You know, generics business was really being challenged because of the rest of the legacy brands that were being marketed with not very much growth, but Lantus in Europe has driven this growth. Now we have the opportunity in the US. So we are definitely very hopeful that in the next fiscal, that is FY27, Lantus both in US and Europe will see a good showing.
Ma'am, upcoming GLP-1 opportunity in reality. Over two to five years, because a lot of patents, of course, type 2 diabetes, obesity, particular drug growth over two to five years. GLP-1s are very important, and at Biocon, we are the uniquely placed company. Both insulins, GLP-1 portfolio, and not just as a portfolio play, but we have a fully integrated model. We are one of the few companies globally in the generic space that has an end-to-end capability from the API to the drug product and to the device. They are either outsourcing the API or outsourcing drug product manufacturing. So we believe we will have a very good position, and we don't want to sprint to the finishing line. We want to run this marathon. And I think the combination of insulins and GLP-1s gives us a very unique position because this is how we will have to play. Global scale and a global scale manufacturing is going to really determine who will succeed. It is not enough, but do you have the scale that is backing it? Companies might have an approval, but they don't have the scale backing it. So you are going to see a large number of small players, but there will be a few big players, and we will be one of the big players.
So you did mention also market across the geographies. So insulins is a very important segment for us, and we are present in all geographies at the moment. And when you say all geographies, we are selling three types of insulins. One is glargine, one is aspart, and one is recombinant human insulin. And what is important is this is going to become a very big franchise for us going forward. We have already crossed $300 million in this franchise, and there's a lot of headroom left to grow. If you look, I don't want to even talk about market share. GH market 90% market share, GH market 20%, 25%, 30% market. Not just, you should look at the size of this business going forward. It's a very, very big opportunity for Biocon because there are very few insulin companies in the world, main insulin companies. No, we are trying to address that demand, so it's not for want of demand, but it's really we have to churn out more capacity. Malaysia, drug product capacity double, and away from quarter 1 of FY27, we will start operationalizing that facility. From next year, drug substance double. From next year, you'll see even stronger growth.

Kiran Mazumdar-shaw 9:10 ↗
I have already guided all the major capex investments are behind us. We are going to now focus on capacity utilization and business growth.
