Craig Federighi, Apple's Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, appeared at the September 9, 2026 Apple Event to introduce the iPhone Duo, a foldable iPhone, alongside other product announcements. During the event, he described the device's design philosophy, stating that Apple optimized iOS for the new form factor by moving essential controls to the side to free up vertical space and tailoring system apps to take advantage of the larger canvas. In a subsequent interview on September 23, 2026, Federighi discussed the rationale behind certain iOS design choices, including the lack of a right-edge swipe-back gesture. He explained that maintaining spatial consistency in animations and gestures is important for a natural user experience, describing gestures as manipulating something physical rather than triggering arbitrary actions. He also compared Apple's approach to tablet app development with Android's, asserting that iPad apps are more tailored to their form factor than Android tablet apps, and expressed confidence that developers would similarly adapt their apps for the iPhone Duo.

“It becomes spatially inconsistent for one. I think having a spatially consistent model and having the animations really map to what's going on is an important part of providing a really natural experience for the user. And so we don't see these gestures as sort of kicking off arbitrary actions. We think of them as manipulating something physical. And the logic of the device, the way things animated in is they slide i”
“Siri AI will not be available initially in the EU on iOS and iPadOS. We're working hard to find a path forward that preserves our users' privacy and security. In China, Siri AI and the other new Apple Intelligence features will not be available while we work through regulatory requirements.”
“Today, many AI providers talk about privacy, but by default, most of them retain your personal interactions, leaving the onus on you to defend your privacy, like using temporary chats, deleting conversations, or even turning off entire features. At Apple, we believe privacy in AI is non-negotiable.”
“We had something working but it didn't converge quality‑wise the way we needed it to; as you get off the beaten path with Siri it's open‑ended what you might ask and we wanted to be really, really reliable, and we weren't able to achieve that reliability in the time we thought initially we could get it done.”
“And we delivered all of this while taking an extraordinary step forward for privacy in AI with Private Cloud Compute, which extends the privacy of your iPhone into the cloud so no one else can access your data, not even Apple.”
“That message that you asked to be summarized was encrypted to a trusted device in the cloud that then performed artificial intelligence processing on it to return you the result and never recorded anything about that data, that email. Apple had no access to that email, no one else did.”
